An overview of my most noteworthy projects
Gaymers
The research of this project started as a group project with Fay Zeilstra, Insan Mardhika and Justinas Prekeris. We started with doing research on a specific user group and a collection. We had chosen ‘’gamers’’ and ‘’the web archive’’. After our group research, we started to design an interface individually, an interface that connected the two components.
Concept:
For my interface, I decided to make a board game. This game aimed to create a safer space for queer gamers or ‘’gaymers’’ in the general gaming community. I started by doing research into board games and how they are made. How does a boardgame become playable? I started thinking about what I wanted my game to be about an made different prototypes. I tested these out on gamers, and after several test runs, I finetuned the game and made it into a playable board game. On the archive, I found different databases that had a lot of famous gaming characters and how these characters connected to the LGBTQ+ community. I decided that they should be my pawns with extra powers. These powers were readable in a flyer that also gave queer information about the character. In that way, the flyer becomes part of the game and not an annoying flyer that you would just throw away.
For my design I tried to fit the gamers aesthetic and wanted to make it appealing to my user group. I made icons that connected to the game, in that way the game was more playable and easier to navigate. For the flyer, I decided to make it in the same style as the board game so it would become a whole. With experimenting, making, asking for feedback, and finetuning I was able to make a coherent game.
